Who each is built for
Recurly

Recurly fits a consumer or digital subscription business at scale, where the job is keeping subscribers: intelligent payment retries, churn prediction, cancel-save offers, Shopify subscriptions and gateway orchestration. If you have thousands of card-on-file subscribers and a retention team, Recurly was designed around you.

ChargeOver

ChargeOver fits a business that bills customers on a recurring basis and wants the billing to run itself: agencies on retainers, accounting firms, SaaS companies under a few thousand customers, ISPs, alarm dealers, anyone sending the same invoices every month. You get subscriptions, one-time invoices, automatic retries on declined cards, a customer portal and 40+ reports in every plan at a flat monthly price, and a person to call when something looks off.

Where they differ

01

A percentage of revenue vs a flat monthly price

Recurly Starter is $249 a month plus 0.9% of every dollar you bill over $40K. Bill $250K a month and the fee is $2,139. All-Access is priced as a percentage of everything you bill, billed annually.

ChargeOver is a flat monthly price set by how many customers you bill, from $229. Bill those customers $50K a month or $500K and the price is the same.

02

Annual at scale vs month to month at every size

Recurly's All-Access plan is billed annually and starts at $1M a year in billing. QuickBooks sync, multiple dunning campaigns, ACH and multi-entity sit above Starter.

ChargeOver is month to month at every size. QuickBooks Desktop and Online, declined-card retries, ACH and multiple brands are in the plans from the start.

03

Built to fight churn vs built to run billing

Recurly's edge is retention: intelligent retries, churn models and the Engage add-on for cancel-save offers, from $1,600 a month. That is the right buy for a consumer subscription with thousands of cards on file.

ChargeOver is B2B recurring billing: subscriptions and one-time invoices on the same statement, automatic retries on declined cards, a customer portal, 50+ gateways, and a sync to QuickBooks Desktop, Online and Xero. Support is a chat or a Zoom call with a person.

Migration

What moving off Recurly looks like

You send us an export of customers, plans and open invoices. We load them into your ChargeOver account, map your plans and billing cycles, and connect the payment gateway you already use, so stored cards keep working where the gateway supports token migration. You run both systems for one billing cycle, compare the invoices, then switch the customer-facing emails over. Most of the work is on our side.

Step 1 Export customers, subscriptions and open balances from Recurly
Step 2 We import and map them; you review the plan mapping
Step 3 Connect your existing gateway (50+ supported) and sync QuickBooks or Xero
Step 4 Parallel-run one billing cycle and compare
Step 5 Switch customer emails and the portal to ChargeOver Go live
FAQ

ChargeOver vs Recurly FAQ

Usually, and the gap grows with your billing. Recurly Starter is $249 a month plus 0.9% of billing above $40K a month: $429 at $60K a month, $2,139 at $250K. ChargeOver is a flat $229 a month for up to 200 customers and $344 for 300, whatever you bill them. Above $1M a year Recurly moves you to All-Access, a percentage of everything you bill on an annual contract; ChargeOver stays month to month.

Yes. ChargeOver's revenue recognition follows ASC 606: revenue is recognized on a schedule and deferred revenue is reported, built in from the Enterprise Basic plan. Recurly sells revenue recognition as an add-on, Recurly RevRec, from $850 a month billed annually.

It matters a lot. Recurly is built around card-on-file subscribers: intelligent retries, churn prediction, cancel-save flows, Shopify. ChargeOver bills agencies on retainers, accounting firms, alarm dealers, ISPs and SaaS companies the same way, with subscriptions, one-time invoices and usage charges on one invoice. If your customers get an invoice and pay by card or ACH, you are our customer.

An export of customers, plans and open invoices from Recurly, an import on our side, one parallel billing cycle to compare, then a switch of the customer-facing emails. You keep your payment gateway, so stored payment methods carry over where the gateway supports it. Book a demo and bring your customer count; we will give you a timeline on the call.

Yes, both QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online, plus Xero. Invoices, payments and customers sync without re-keying. Intuit stopped selling new Desktop Pro and Premier subscriptions to new customers in 2024 and is steering customers to Online. If you're on Desktop today, ChargeOver keeps syncing while you're there and syncs to Online when you move, so your billing doesn't have to change twice. Recurly's integration is with QuickBooks Online only, and its documentation lists it on the higher plans, not Starter.

Yes, on every ChargeOver plan, alongside cards. Recurly's pricing page lists ACH under All-Access, its annual plan.
