Stripe Billing

Stripe Billing fits a software product with engineers on the billing project: plans and prices defined through the API, checkout and the customer portal wired into the app, usage events streamed from the product, and Tax and Revenue Recognition bought from Stripe as they are needed. If your team builds on Stripe and billing is part of the product, it was designed around you.

ChargeOver

ChargeOver fits a business where billing is run by the person who does the books: agencies on retainers, accounting firms, SaaS companies under a few thousand customers, anyone invoicing other businesses every month. Subscriptions, one-time invoices, automatic retries on declined cards, a customer portal and 40+ reports come in every plan at a flat monthly price, set up from the admin screen, with a person to call when something looks off.

Where they differ

01

A percentage of billing vs a flat monthly price

Stripe Billing is 0.7% of everything you bill, or $1,500 a month on a one-year contract at $250K of billing. That sits on top of card processing, and one-off invoices (0.4% to 0.5% each), Revenue Recognition and Tax are billed separately.

ChargeOver is a flat monthly price set by how many customers you bill, from $229. Keep Stripe as your processor and your card fees stay exactly where they are; the 0.7% goes away.

02

Built for developers vs built for the person doing the billing

Stripe Billing is an API product. Staff can create subscriptions and invoices in the Dashboard, but Checkout, advanced customer portal features and usage reporting are built through the API, and changes go back to the engineering queue.

ChargeOver is set up from the admin screen, with no code. Your billing lead creates plans, edits invoices and changes a customer's subscription without filing a ticket, and support is a chat or a Zoom call with a person.

03

Card checkout vs invoices your business customers pay

Stripe Billing is at its best charging a card on file for a subscription. One-off invoices cost 0.4% to 0.5% each on top of the Billing fee, and its QuickBooks and Xero connections are third-party apps; for QuickBooks Desktop, Stripe offers a file export rather than a sync.

ChargeOver bills subscriptions and one-time charges on one invoice at no extra fee, takes card, ACH and checks against it, and syncs to QuickBooks Desktop, Online and Xero itself.

What moving off Stripe Billing looks like

You keep your Stripe account. We connect ChargeOver to it as your payment gateway, import your customers, plans and open invoices, and map your prices and billing cycles. Saved cards stay in Stripe, so customers don't re-enter anything. You run both for one billing cycle, compare the invoices, then cancel the Stripe Billing subscriptions and switch the customer-facing emails over.

Step 1 Connect your existing Stripe account to ChargeOver as the payment gateway
Step 2 We import customers, subscriptions and open balances; you review the plan mapping
Step 3 Sync QuickBooks or Xero
Step 4 Parallel-run one billing cycle and compare
Step 5 Cancel the Stripe Billing subscriptions and switch customer emails and the portal to ChargeOver Go live
FAQ

ChargeOver vs Stripe Billing FAQ

It depends on how much you bill. Stripe Billing is 0.7% of billing volume, so at $30K a month it is $210, and at $250K a month it is $1,750, or $1,500 on a one-year contract, before card fees. ChargeOver is a flat $229 a month for up to 200 customers and $344 for 300, whatever you bill them. Below roughly $33K a month of billing Stripe Billing can be cheaper; above it ChargeOver pulls ahead, and the gap grows with your revenue.

Yes. Stripe is one of the 50+ payment gateways ChargeOver connects to. You keep your Stripe account, your payouts and your card processing rate; ChargeOver replaces the billing layer, so the 0.7% Stripe Billing fee goes away. If you ever want a second gateway for ACH or a different card rate, you can add one without building an integration.

No. When ChargeOver runs on your existing Stripe account, the saved payment methods stay in Stripe and ChargeOver charges them on schedule. Customers keep paying the way they do today.

No. Plans, subscriptions, invoices, retries on declined cards and the customer portal are all set up from the admin screen. There is a REST API and webhooks if you want to connect your app, but billing doesn't depend on them.

Yes, both QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online, plus Xero. Invoices, payments and customers sync without re-keying. Intuit stopped selling new Desktop Pro and Premier subscriptions to new customers in 2024 and is steering customers to Online. If you're on Desktop today, ChargeOver keeps syncing while you're there and syncs to Online when you move, so your billing doesn't have to change twice. Stripe's QuickBooks Online and Xero connections are third-party apps, and for QuickBooks Desktop Stripe offers a file export rather than a sync.

Yes. ChargeOver's revenue recognition follows ASC 606: revenue is recognized on a schedule and deferred revenue is reported, built in from the Enterprise Basic plan. Stripe sells Revenue Recognition as a separate product: $25 a month plus 0.25% of volume, or annual plans from $190 a month.

Yes. ChargeOver bills metered usage on the same invoice as subscriptions and one-time charges. If your product streams millions of usage events a month straight from your code, Stripe's usage billing is built for that (up to 100M events a month included), and it goes further than we do there.
